Wellington Cricket Club named as 2014 Good Sports Club Award winner
A fantastic off-field victory is being celebrated at Wellington Cricket Club, which has been crowned Tasmanian Good Sports Club of the Year. The Good Sports Awards recognise community clubs and people who show leadership in encouraging healthy behaviours to tackle alcohol, obesity and mental health issues through sport. The Australian Drug Foundations pioneering Good Sports program works with more than 6,500 clubs nationwide to help them develop healthier and safer environments for their members, and create a healthier future for the great Australian sports club. Good Sports Tasmania Manager, Mark Nash, said the club is building a bright future for sports lovers in the area.
Wellington Cricket Club has gone above and beyond in promoting healthy attitudes towards responsible alcohol consumption. This award and $1,000 prize money is well-deserved the club sets an example that the whole community can, and should, be
proud of,” Mr Nash said. “Sport has the power to inspire, bring people together and help achieve dreams. We want to reward the people and clubs, such as Wellington Cricket Club, whose dream it is to see a healthier future for their communities."
Wellington Cricket Club has taken a number of steps to ensure it has a healthier relationship with alcohol and gives more back to the community. All committee members who serve behind the bar have undergone Responsible Service of Alcohol training and both light- and mid-strength beers are now stocked to ensure that low alcohol options are available. The 'look after a mate‟ program initiated by the club, designed to reduce the risk of drink driving and ensure people get home safely after functions, has been embraced by everyone.
The club has grown from having one senior team five years ago to three now and both the on-field success and off-field attitudes have been vital in attracting new members. Club President Col Felmingham said everyone involved was delighted that their hard work had been recognised through the award. “This award highlights the huge importance we place on our overall culture,” said Mr Felmingham. “We have been a very successful club on the field, but happy members both on and off the field means we have, and will always strive to have, long-term members who become live long mates.”
Wellington Cricket Club is now hoping to make Tasmania especially proud by winning the 2014 National Good Sports Club Award, which will be presented at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground on 20 November. Good Sports is supported in Tasmania by the Tasmanian Government. The Good Sports Awards are supported by Victor Sports Australia‟s leading supplier
in medical sport supplies.
